US Committee on Foreign Investment Breached by Chinese Hackers
As a part of a broader cyberattack of the U.S. Treasury Department’s unclassified system, it is now being reported that the Committee on Foreign Investment in the US (CFIUS), the US government office that reviews foreign investments for national security risks, was also breached by Chinese hackers. The theft, which has not previously been reported, has drawn attention as it highlights Beijing’s interest in spying on a US government office that has broad powers to block Chinese investment in the US.
CFIUS gained greater authority to scrutinize real estate sales near US military bases. US lawmakers and national security officials are worried that the Chinese could use the hacked information to plan land acquisitions to spy on those bases. Read more about this story on our LinkedIn page
