Ransomware Attack Forces Georgia Voter Registration System to Disconnect
Georgia’s Coffee County suffered a ransomware attack this month that forced the county to sever its connection to the state’s voter registration system as a precautionary measure. Federal and county officials are trying to determine who conducted the hack. Upon examination, Coffee County’s IT infrastructure showed no evidence of exfiltration of data but did indicate cyber-activity by an unknown malicious actor.
Coffee County was cut off from GARViS, their voter registration system, for multiple days out of an abundance for caution, but county officials are now reconnected to the voter registration system via backup laptops and cellular networks that are isolated from the county network that was hacked.
