Network Hardware Issue Knocks Out National Weather Service

Even as extreme weather continues to grip the country, the National Weather Service (NWS) is experiencing a vast network outage disrupting numerous operational functions. An initial investigation into the cause of the outage revealed that the outage’s cause was a network hardware configuration issue.

A negative ramification of this outage is the fact that it has hampered the agency’s ability to operate smoothly thereby leading to a degradation of forecast and warning dissemination, disruption of data flows, and sluggish websites. NWS systems engineers worked overnight to restore some functionality – including the flow of weather forecasts and warnings.
