Clashes have broken out across Bangladesh between the police and student protesters demanding an end to a quota that reserved 30% of government jobs for relatives of veterans who fought in Bangladesh’s war of independence in 1971. The violence has killed more than a hundred people and has led to a curfew and a shoot-on-sight order with military personnel patrolling the capital and other areas.
As a result of this violence, the internet in Bangladesh has been shut down for five days now and the government declared Monday as a public holiday, as authorities maintained tight control despite apparent calm following a court order that scaled back a controversial system for allocating government jobs that sparked violent protests, leaving thousands of IT companies with financial and reputational losses, and workers feeling helpless.
