Internet Outage Sees Portland, OR Emergency Services “Going Old School”
Several City of Portland offices were affected by an internet outage for five hours on Tuesday, including the text-to-911 feature for emergency services. During the outage which lasted from 6:30 a.m. to noon, officials said that anyone experiencing an emergency requiring immediate attention should use the telephone and call 911.
Emergency services officials said the outage had them “going old school” to respond to emergencies. This led to heavier radio traffic, a backlog in uploading medical information, and also emergency service providers resorting to map books rather than using their computer mapping systems.
