Steelmaker Nucor has reported a cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized third-party access to its IT systems. In an effort to mitigate the damages, the company has halted operations at multiple locations and has begun restarting them while investigating the breach.

Nucor has notified federal law enforcement and is taking affected systems offline, along with attempting to contain and recover from the issue, according to an SEC filing.

This incident underscores the critical importance of having complete visibility and situational awareness into your infrastructure, including being able to monitor all access to internal systems. Organizations that want to secure themselves must invest in robust cybersecurity architectures, and manufacturers, in particular, have now been ordered to meet NIST and CMMC guidelines in many cases.
