OpenAI Experiences Major Global Outage Yet Again

OpenAI experienced a significant global outage impacting its core services, including ChatGPT, Sora, and the GPT API. The disruption affected users across North America, Europe, and Asia, with widespread reports of login failures, blank chat screens, and mid-session disconnections. DownDetector recorded a spike in complaints, with 88% of users reporting that ChatGPT was entirely inaccessible, while others faced delays and issues with Sora and Codex. Despite the scale of the incident, OpenAI’s status page initially showed the system as fully operational, with no acknowledgment of a known issue at that time.

This marks the second major outage in July, raising concerns among developers, businesses, and content creators who rely on these platforms for daily operations. Social media platforms, especially X (formerly Twitter), were flooded with user complaints, including login loops and unsaved session losses. The root cause remains unclear, with no confirmation yet on whether it was due to system overload, a software bug, or a cybersecurity incident.

Such disruptions highlight the critical need for companies like OpenAI to maintain robust, end-to-end monitoring across networks, applications, services, and infrastructure. Proactive visibility into system health allows for quicker detection, isolation, and resolution of issues before they escalate into widespread service failures. For organizations delivering high-demand AI services, comprehensive monitoring is essential not only for resilient performance but also for maintaining trust, preventing data loss, and ensuring business continuity at scale.
