Nevada Closes All State Offices After Apparent Ransomware

Nevada continues to work on recovery following a cyberattack that began early Sunday morning, significantly impacting government websites, phone systems, and online services. The Governor’s Technology Office first detected the issue at 1:52 AM PT, initially referring to it as a "network issue." As disruptions persisted, the state warned the public of limited availability of services and ultimately closed all state offices on Monday.

The Governor's office later confirmed the incident as a cybersecurity event and launched around-the-clock recovery efforts. While emergency services like 911 remain operational, many other digital state resources continue to be intermittently unavailable. Officials have not disclosed whether ransomware is involved, but the prolonged disruption and containment measures suggest a serious breach.

Though there is currently no evidence that personally identifiable information has been compromised, the nature of ransomware attacks often includes stealthy network access for data exfiltration. The state is working with local, tribal, and federal partners on the investigation and urges residents to be vigilant against phishing attempts.

This incident underscores the urgent need for next-generation cybersecurity monitoring that provides 100% visibility across all infrastructure layers. To defend against sophisticated, multi-vector threats, organizations must move beyond isolated tools and adopt an integrated, unified platform like NIKSUN that combines Network Detection and Response (NDR), Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR), Extended Detection and Response (XDR), Security Information and Event Management (SIEM), Security Orchestration, Automation and Response (SOAR), and real-time Threat Intelligence. A consolidated cybersecurity ecosystem enables faster detection, contextual correlation, automated response, and comprehensive threat visibility - minimizing downtime, protecting critical data, and reducing the risk of widespread disruption in the face of evolving cyber threats.
