Amgen Data Breach Exposes Patient and Company Data

Amgen has disclosed a "material" cybersecurity incident in which attackers accessed the biopharma giant's cloud storage environments hosted by external service providers, stealing patient health information and proprietary company data. According to a securities filing, Amgen has confirmed the theft through its investigation. While the company reported no impact to products, manufacturing, financial reporting, or patient delivery, its investigation into the full scope of compromised records is ongoing. The incident continues a wave of attacks against biopharma companies holding both high-value IP and sensitive patient data. Novo Nordisk was recently hit by a breach involving clinical trial participant data, with two extortion groups demanding multi-million-dollar ransoms — one, TheUSERS007, claimed to have used an adaptive AI engine called Venomware. Novartis faced a 2022 breach involving DNA and RNA drug technology data. The pattern points to two structural challenges: biopharma clouds concentrate uniquely valuable data at attackers' preferred entry point, and the rise of AI-assisted intrusion tooling is compressing the time from initial access to meaningful exfiltration. Regulators and investors are increasingly treating these events as material, which raises the bar on both detection speed and disclosure accuracy.
